  223. Down feathers form the fuzzy coats most nestlings wear until their contour and flight feathers grow out. This juvenile down is gradually replaced by normal plummage, giving the older fledglings a ragged, dishevelled look until they finally lose all of the juvenile down.

Red-tailed hawks build large nests (2-3 feet across), usually high in a sturdy tree anywhere from 20 to 70 feet above the ground. Red-tails lay 2-3 dull white or biege eggs spotted with darker brown. The female incubates the eggs for approximately one month before they hatch. Nestlings are able to fly after about 45-50 days.
